Korea is a mature and advanced market for the pharmaceutical industry, with a high level of clinical research activity, both pre- and post-marketing. With a rapidly growing pharmaceutical industry comprising over 2,000 companies operating in the sector, Korea’s pharmaceutical market has experienced a double digit growth and is second only to Japan in terms of market potential in Asia, according to Price Waterhouse Coopers. Annual pharmaceutical market growth is around 10% and the market is expected to reach almost US$15 billion by 2010, reflecting a wealth of opportunities in market and R&D cooperation for foreign investors and future R&D partners.

Korea offers a large patient population, state of the art medical facilities and a pool of highly qualified medical practitioners. There are more than 225 well-equipped hospitals accredited as clinical institutes with a pool of 83,000 nurses and 75,000 physicians. Global clinical trials have grown substantially with the increasing number of researchers and field experts.

Taking all the parameters into account, Korea is ranked by Price Waterhouse Coopers as the third best outsourcing destination in Asia Pacific after China and India. Strong market growth potential is a key reason for Korea’s third place spot.
